As a Bboy (breakdancer), I used to fear taking videos of myself.
I’d cringe at watching myself.
I’d get so disgusted that I want to always run away and hide my face.
But that’s the folly. That’s the make-or-break moment.
If you want to improve, you’ve to get disgusted with yourself.
No artist ever feels great about themselves at the start.
They feel shitty.
They feel ugly.
They feel embarrassed.
They feel downright terrible.
And that is why you need to get disgusted with yourself.
You need to get uncomfortable so you know you’re ready to break out of the comfort zone. You do know that point of getting out of your comfort zone is to feel uncomfortable right?
You need to see what others are seeing so you know what you’re representing.
You need to get used to the disgusted feeling so you can start to know that actually, you aren’t doing that bad at all and that you’ve been too hard on yourself.
You need to keep pushing yourself then, and you will absolutely progress at your fastest when you are given the hardest, most disgusting lessons in your life and not when you’re fed comfortable, soothing advice by your friends who are too polite to tell you the truth.
